What is a Mother Blessing?

This is a special event that celebrates a woman's rite of passage into motherhood.

A Mother Blessing is different to a baby shower, where friends and family 'shower' the new mother with material gifts for the baby. A Mother Blessing, on the other hand, is a spiritual reflection inspired by the roots of the Navajo tradition, where women celebrate and support the emotional and spiritual journey into motherhood by nurturing the new mother. The ceremony lasts approximately 3 hours (with an hour either side to set up/pack away) after which friends might like to stay for some kai.

“Good beginnings make a positive difference in the world, so it is worth our while to provide the best possible care for mothers and babies throughout this extraordinarily influential part of life.”

What happens at a Mother Blessing?

This is totally dependent on the Mum's personal taste and preferences. Once booked, I like to meet with the Mum/talk on the phone to talk about her likes and dislikes, and what she might like to incorporate into her ceremony. I ask for a guest list, date, time and venue, and then will then send bespoke invitations out to her friends, keeping in contact with them in the led up to the event. I facilitate the Mother Blessing (usually at her, or a friend's home) in a fun, friendly and informal way; making sure the guests have a good time and that the new mum is left feeling nutured. I love this youtube video that gives a great picture of how a Mother Blessing might be facilitated. It might not be to everyones' taste and that is ok! It is bespoke to the expectant Mumma's style and preference, so they can choose what they would like at their event.

I also taking bookings from friends! If you have pregnant friend and would like to organise her a surprise Mother Blessing, get in touch!

"I now have a memory which marks a really important part of my life."

"I was lucky enough to find a doula who was able to facilitate a mother blessing too. What luck! I very much enjoyed the mother blessing Anna organised for me. It was professional yet easy going. It was grounded and the space was held so we were able to express ourselves fully in a safe manner. Looking back at mother blessing makes me thing I did a favour to myself. I now have a memory which marks a really important part of my life. I have a positive memory of being pampered, heard and seen by my closest friends. A memory to balance and acknowledge my pregnancy, the beauty of it and also the harder moments pregnancy brings. It has been very joyful experience".
